Under the Bankruptcy Code, you must enroll in and complete credit counseling with a court approved organization. There are many court approved counseling agencies. In my experience, most charge similar fees (usually $10-$15 per filer, per course). Most agencies offer their courses over the phone or online, so they could be completed from the comfort and convenience of your home. There are two types of credit counseling. The first type must be completed before you file your case. The pre-filing course covers your current household budget and whether you may have alternatives to filing bankruptcy. The second course, also referred to as debtor education, must be completed after your case is filed and before your case is completed. The post-filing course covers management of your finances in the future.
